Iam47yearsoldandIhavelivedintheWilliamsburgareaforalargepartofmyliferstinhighschoolwhenmyparentsmovedourfamilyherethenIreturnedinmyearly30s.eopportunitytomovebacktoWilliamsburgaroseaftercompletingmydegreeinSocialWorkatCNU.IdidsocialworkforawhilethenwenttoworkforanindependentlyownedbookstorewhichImanagedthelast4yearsitwasinoperation.WhenthestoreclosedinDecemberof2010Iwasociallylaidoandhavingnotdonesocialworkinawhilethebestopportunitytogetworkwasinretail.HoweverIfoundmyselfworkingtwoorthreejobsatatimeinorderpaymybills.EventuallyafterrobbingPetertopayPaulfortwoandahalfyearsIfellbehindonmyrent.AlthoughagoodtenantIwasforcedtotellmylandlordIcouldnotcatchupandtherewerenoprogramstoprovideassistanceavailablethroughtheU.S.DepartmentofHousingandUrbanDevelopment.IthenwenttoRichmondtheclosestlargecitytotrytoaccessservices.Iutilizedthecityshelterandremainedonthestreetforfourmonthswhiletryingtomaintainmyhealthandwell-being.AstheyearendedIrealizedIwasmakinglittleheadway.Everythingaboutbeinghomelessseemstobeanuphillbattlefrominconsistenthousingtotransportationhygienefoodandmoneynottomentiontheemotionalandmentalstress.EventuallyIcontactedsomefriendsinWilliamsburgwhohadoeredtoletmestaywiththemtemporarily.ImadeplanstoreturnonthebusthenexteveningandunbeknownsttomemyfriendhadcalledastamemberatherchurchtondoutifsheknewofanyresourcesthatcouldhelpmewhenIgotbacktoWilliamsburg.SherecommendedtheUnitedWay.IsoonlearnedthattheUnitedWaywasinneedofsomeonetoworkasahousemanagerforare-entryhouse.eRe-EntryProgramservesadualpurpose.Primarilytheprogramservesindividualsre-enteringthecommunityafterservingtimeinjail.SecondarilyasahousemanagerIwouldbegivenasalaryformyworkandafullyfurnishedhomewithroomandboardprovidedwhichIcouldhavenotpreviouslyprovidedformyself.InonemotionIhavebeenoeredasolutiontobothofmyobstaclestosuccesshomelessnessandunemployment.Iamverygratefulforthisprogramandforwhatithasdonetoturnaroundmylife.eideaofchoosinghomelessornearhomelesspeopleashousemanagersissuchagreatideabecausethenumberofpeopleservedismaximizedandmyexperienceputsmeinauniquepositiontoempathizewiththeresidents.isopportunityhasgivenmemanythingsnancialrecoveryachancetoworkandbeproductivesafetyandsecurity.Iamverythankfulforthisprogramithasthepotentialtohelpmanypeopleandserveasamodelforotherlocalitiesduringatimewhensomanypeopleareinneed.ankyousomuchtotheUnitedWayofGreaterWilliamsburg-Re-EntryHouseManagerFromHomelesstoHopefulIamverygratefulforthisprogramandforwhatithasdonetoturnaroundmylife.eideaofchoosinghomelessornearhomelesspeopleashousemanagersissuchagreatideabecausethenumberofpeopleservedismaximizedandmyexperienceputsmeinauniquepositiontoempathizewiththeresidents.-Re-EntryHouseManagerPROGRAMSeNewYorkTimesreportedin2013thatatleast40ofAmericansages25to60willexperienceayearinpoverty.AccordingtotheVirginiaHousingCoalitionanestimated57ofrentersinVirginiadonotearnenoughtoaordatwo-bedroomunitatfairmarketprice.Researchshowsthatpoorqualityhousingisaleadingpredictorforbehavioralandemotionalhealthproblemsinchildren.
