2015 Agency Grantees and Funded Programs for Greater Williamsburg

The ARC of Greater Williamsburg

Serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through support services. These services provide health, wellness, educational and life skills training, plus social and recreational programs. Additionally, respite is provided for families and caregivers.

Programs funded by your United Way investment: Support Services for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities including: Recreational Therapy, Arts and Culture, Lifelong Learning, and Adapted Wellness

 

Avalon Center for Women and Children

Provides programs for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault including emergency shelter, transitional apartments for qualified clients, shelter residence and life skills courses. Outreach program includes: 24-hour Helpline, individual and group counseling, legal advocacy, weekly sessions for special needs’ students at the high school level, and advocacy workshops for volunteers and the community at large.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Helps young people in our service area achieve their highest potential during their formative years by providing positive, caring mentor relationships.

Programs funded by your United Way investment: Community-based Mentoring and School-based Mentoring programs

 

Child and Family Connection

Provide child care resource and referral agency promoting quality child care, child abuse prevention, and providing families, children and organizations with behavioral counseling and consultation services; specializing in children newborn to 12 years old.

Program funded by your United Way investment: Adult Youth Violence Prevention program, Mental Health program, and Consumer Credit Counseling Services

 

Child Development Resources

Serving young children and their families in programs of early intervention, child care, Early Head Start, health and developmental screening and provide training for early childhood professionals.

Colonial CASA

Provides volunteers to act as court-appointed advocates for children who have been abused and neglected.

Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast

An all-girl serving organization dedicated to delivering an outcome-driven Girl Scout leadership experience to girls in K-12th grade. This is accomplished through a variety of program pathways, including camp where girls discover their talents and interests, connect with others, and take action to improve their communities.

Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg

Provides hospice support to terminally ill patients and their caregivers; equipment and supplies; short-term 24-hour residential care; bereavement support; library and information to entire community.

Housing Partnerships Inc.

Rehabs homes and offers home ownership opportunities to low-income families, assisting this population to maintain safe, warm, dry, affordable housing, and prevent homelessness.

Literacy for Life

One-to-one tutoring for adults of the Greater Williamsburg area in reading, writing, math, English, American culture and citizenship.

Program funded by your United Way investment: Adult Literacy program.

 

Meals On Wheels

Provides a meal delivery service that delivers low-cost, hot, nutritious meals to home-bound, aged, handicapped, and/or convalescent individuals in the local area who, for physical, emotional or financial reasons cannot obtain and/or prepare their own meals.

Peninsula Agency on Aging

Provides care coordination, subsidized in-home care, and adult day care to help the elderly remain independent at home and support caregivers. Also operates a senior dining program, offers financial support for Meals on Wheels, and origination PADRN.org to provide information and referrals to supportive community resources such as long-term care, health and wellness, legal and financial issues.

The Salvation Army

Assistance with food, clothing and shelter, counseling and referrals to other agencies, and Holiday assistance.

United Way Community Resource Center (CRC)

The CRC is a direct service and referral source to addresses emergency needs of food, clothing, rent and utility assistance, in the community. Volunteers serve as receptionists or community resource assistants who interview clients to help them with the next steps in problem solving and providing wrap around services.

United Way Home for Good Program

The Home for Good Program is designed to target individuals and families facing barriers to securing permanent housing on their own. Barriers may include credit issues, criminal history, and/or poor life skills including financial mismanagement and a lack of job skills or underemployment. The Housing Program will provide rental qualification, rent subsidies, and case management to clients who have the potential to live independently.

United Way Guest House Re-Entry Program

The Re-Entry Program provides stable housing and support services to previously incarcerated individuals. The purpose of the program is to engage and enable individuals who wish to make a successful transition from incarceration to the community.

Williamsburg Area Faith in Action

An interfaith coalition of volunteers that recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers to assist homebound elderly, disabled, and chronically ill persons, who need support and care to remain in their homes. Services include home visitation, transportation, light housekeeping, shopping and respite care.
