Offers: Williamsburg Area Faith in Action is an interfaith coalition of volunteers focusing on the homebound needs of he frail elderly, disabled, and chronically ill. It is a private not-for-profit agency operated by a Board of Directors of Faith Communities and local agencies. Primarily a volunteer program, FIA has a full-time director who coordinates services with other volunteer community efforts. FAI recruits, trains and mobilizes volunteers to assist homebound persons who need support and care to remain in their own homes.

Offers: Volunteers delivering hot, noon-time nutritious meals, Monday through Friday (Including holidays), to homebound, aged, handicapped and/or convalescent individuals who, for physical or financial reasons, cannot obtain and/or prepare their own meals. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals, (and a few minutes of cheerful conversation), Monday through Friday (from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m.). Delivery time varies according to the number of meals ordered for the day. Home delivered meals are made available to all residents over the age of 18 in James City County, the City of Williamsburg & the Bruton District of York County. Fee: $3.50 per meal for those recipients able to pay for their meals. Billing is done on a monthly basis. For those recipients who can only afford to pay a portion, a sliding scale is used. We seek contributions from individuals, churches, clubs and organizations in the community, as well as PAA (Peninsula Agency on Aging), to help those individuals who cannot contribute toward the cost of their meals

Offers: Temporary foster care for infants provided in nurturing foster homes while the adoption process is finalized. Temporary foster care if birth-mother (and/or parents) is experiencing problems, i.e., financial, emotional, or physical, within her own home. Geared for mothers (wed or unwed) who want to place their child for adoption, and mothers who want to give temporary custody to Children’s Home Society of Virginia until their current home, work, or personal situation improves. Adults are needed as foster parents. Foster parents are required to provide caring, compassionate, and nurturing homes for temporary foster care of the infants and toddlers that Children’s Home Society of Virginia has in temporary custody. There is a special demand for African-American foster parents, as well as any adults who could care for “special needs” babies (some have medical conditions that require additional attention). Offers: The Foster Grandparent Program is a national senior volunteer program that was created by the Federal government in 1965.The Hampton Foster Grandparent program was established in 1972 and serves the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, York and James City Counties. The Foster Grandparent Program provides senior citizens, age 60 and older, the opportunity to volunteer to work with children, of all ages, who have special or exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents work in a variety of settings such as elementary schools, head start programs and daycare centers just to name a few. A stipend and other benefits such as a transportation reimbursement and accident insurance are available to qualified applicants.

Geared for people who live alone thus giving family members peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are not alone; also those with ongoing medical conditions, disabled or handicapped individuals. We utilize volunteers for installation of Lifeline units.

Offers: One-to-one mentoring for students in grades K-12. Geared for students who are in need of improving academic performance, self-esteem, social skills or peer relationships. Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors for one hour per week during the school year. Mentoring takes place at the school during school hours. Contact your child’s teacher or guidance counselor about this program or contact Big Brothers/Big Sisters to be a mentor. United Way of Greater Williamsburg Member Agency.
