How I&R Works

United Way of Greater Williamsburg's Information and Referral Center links people in need to available services. You may have already talked to a couple of human service agencies that were unable to help, don't give up hope.  The I&R center collects and maintains information on hundreds of human service organizations - public and private agencies, civic clubs, support or self-help groups, non-profit and for-profit agencies.  Each one of these organizations offers different services. One of them may be able to help you.

A trained I&R staff person helps determine which referral will best meet your needs by gathering as much information as needed to steer you in the right direction.  Any information you share with an I&R staff person will only be used to help you and handle your situation. All names and information are held in strict confidence.

What you can do

When you go to an agency for assistance, you can help them help you by bringing all of the information you have about your situation.  A little preparation before you call or visit the I&R office will save you a lot of time and effort later.

If you need assistance, you should bring:

  • Current Picture identification with present address OR Address Change Card from DMV - for services in the James City Co./City of Williamsburg/Upper York Co. you must have a picture ID with proof of residence in one of these counties.
  • All documents verifying your situation (such as cut-off notices, eviction notices, etc.)
  • A list of your monthly expenses and income - including social security, SSI, SSDI, Employment, unemployment, retirement, child support, spousal support, etc.
  • A list of all bills or expenses paid out
  • Proof of any other assistance - including food stamps, TANF, Child Support, etc.

Be prepared to:

  • Explain what caused your situation.
  • Explain what steps you have taken to improve your situation.
  • Be willing to take steps to improve your situation once you receive any assistance.
