I. Strategic Plan Purpose and Process
The purpose of this strategic plan is to provide guidance to the United Way Board and staff on fulfilling the mission of The United Way of Greater Williamsburg.
This strategic plan was formulated and prepared by United Way of Greater Williamsburg (UWGW) Board members and key staff using input from community stakeholders including partners, clients, volunteers, and donors.
II. Mission and Values
The mission of the United Way of Greater Williamsburg is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of people and community. UWGW strives to be a collaborative leader in creating a compassionate and responsive community which supports health, education, and financial stability.
UWGW values compassion, respect, understanding, creativity, collaboration, and responsible stewardship of all donations and resources.
III. Current Operations
UWGW brings together community leaders from local business, government, and non-profits to guide United Way resource development, community investment, programs and services, and community engagement. The following is a summary of current UWGW activities.
Resource Development
UWGW conducts an on-going community-wide campaign to raise funds for human service programs in Greater Williamsburg. We also research and apply for appropriate state, federal, corporate, and foundation supported gifts and grants.
Community Investment
The United Way volunteer Community Investment Committee recommends how campaign funds are allocated to effectively meet community needs as they relate to health, education, and financial stability.
Direct Services and Programs
UWGW engages in direct services, programs, and collaborations including the United Way Community Resource Center (CRC), Guest House Re-entry Program, Greater Williamsburg Housing Collaborative, annual Day of Caring, Women’s Leadership Council, monthly food distributions, furniture share program, Legal Advocate Program, and the In Tandem Mentoring Program.
Community Engagement
UWGW engages with the Greater Williamsburg community through workplace giving programs, staff outreach, social media, the UWGW website, special events, and traditional print media.
IV. Strategic Direction
UWGW seeks to improve resource development, community investment, programs and services, and community engagement. The following is an outline of strategic directions that will further the mission of the United Way of Greater Williamsburg.
Resource Development
In order to improve and expand resource development, UWGW will develop non-campaign giving though sponsorships, corporate and foundation grants, and major gifts. We will improve campaign giving by increasing contact with and information to potential and current donors.
Community Investment
In order to responsibly meet the needs of the Greater Williamsburg community, UWGW will invite representatives to participate on the Community Investment Committee and will issue requests for proposals (RFPs) in response to community needs. UWGW builds relationships with other local funders to ensure that community needs are addressed and services appropriately distributed.
Direct Services and Programs
UWGW continuously evaluates community needs and collaboratively develops programs to fill identified gaps in local human services.
Community Engagement
UWGW will increase publication of information related to activities, programs, and campaign using social media, web, and special events. UWGW publishes an annual Community Report to distribute through a variety of outlets.
