United for Food Distribution

United for Food Distribution started in December 2013 to address the need for healthy food options for low income families in our community. Through a partnership between United Way of Greater Williamsburg and the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank the food distribution occurs on the 3rd Thursday every month at the United Way Community Resource Center. Twenty to thirty volunteers help organize, distribute, load groceries into a shopping cart, and unload the groceries into a vehicle for the clients. The food is donated by the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and a local sponsor is secured to pay for the truck, gas, and driver. Clients must sign up ahead of time at the Community Resource center.

The Williamsburg Health Foundation has been a huge supporter and granted $20,000 to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank to bring more fresh produce, dairy, and fruit to the United for Food Williamsburg Distribution. The Williamsburg Health Foundation also gave a grant to United Way of Greater Williamsburg to procure shopping carts which has been a huge help in moving clients quickly through the distribution.

NOW OPERATING A WEST POINT FOOD DISTRIBUTION

As of September 2015, United Way of Greater Williamsburg has partnered with FoodMore Foodbank in Richmond to bring a healthy food distribution in West Point on the 3rd Thursday every month. West Point clients can show up to receive free meats and produce. We are still searching for a permanent location. At this point residents can find out the location from the West Point Department of Social Services, School system, or see our sign out front the location morning of the distribution and get in line. As of right now there is no preregistration needed for this distribution. We’d like to thank Busch Gardens Entertainment Department for making our food distribution sign.
